On 8th March 1855, Buenos Aires government hired the exile Silvino Olivieri to create a military force of volunteers. The Legión AgrícolaMilitar had the task of occupying the area of Bahía Blanca, defeating the resistance of indigenous peoples and establishing an agricultural colony. About 500 volunteers took part in the mission that culminated with the birth of Nueva Roma. The project redefined the trajectories of the democratic exile, connecting the patriotism of Risorgimento diaspora with the Argentine republican movement.
